A common conversation I have with my patients revolves around the false assumption that humans have evolved perfectly and therefore shouldn’t need modern medicine.
The Reality of Human Evolution
Humans have definitely not evolved to be perfect. In fact, our evolution has generally favored the benefit of civilization rather than the individual.
Human Childbirth: Although childbirth has been occurring naturally for millennia, it remains one of the most dangerous processes among mammals. Until a few hundred years ago, the maternal mortality rate was around 1 in 10. Why is human childbirth so dangerous? As we evolved to walk upright, our pelvis had to become narrower to prevent organ prolapse from gravity. Additionally, our large brains, which make us incredibly intelligent and dominant in the animal kingdom, significantly increase the risk of obstructed labor. These evolutionary changes are beneficial for society but not necessarily for the likelihood of a safe birth.
Menopause: Unlike most animals, female humans live beyond their reproductive years. Menopause likely evolved around 5-10 thousand years ago because it was beneficial to have older women who couldn’t fall pregnant but could help raise other children, search for food, and fulfill other important roles in the community. While the loss of estrogen during menopause may not be good for individual health, it was advantageous for broader civilization.
The Role of Modern Medicine
I often hear respected doctors say that Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) interferes with a natural process. However, this perspective overlooks the fact that essentially all modern medicine interferes with natural processes. As a result, life expectancy has doubled, and infant and child mortality rates have improved dramatically.
Menopause: Yes, menopause is a natural process, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for you or that interfering with it is bad. Some people breeze through menopause without needing help, which is great for them. However, many others struggle and deserve medical support, whether through hormonal or non-hormonal options.
Conclusion
It’s important to recognize that while human evolution has brought many benefits, it has not resulted in perfection. Modern medicine plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges that come with our evolutionary history. If you’re experiencing difficulties with menopause, seek medical support to find the best treatment options for your needs. 💛
